FinOps / Cloud Cost Engineer
You find out why the cloud bill doubled, and you make it stop.
No degree needed Moderate technically, harder politically — you spend a lot of time telling teams to change what they built.
Can I actually do this?
A young discipline with an unusually clear value case: you can often pay for your own salary in savings, and that argument travels well in interviews. Open without a degree, and finance or analyst backgrounds transfer as readily as technical ones. The governing framework is published free.
Who it suits. People who enjoy finding the one line item nobody can explain, and who can raise it without starting a fight.
Runway. Months if you already know a cloud platform.
Coming from analysis rather than engineering? That is a real route here, more than in most cloud roles — half this job is explaining a number to people who own a budget. Cloud Support Data Analyst Cloud Engineer

The route
Four stations, in order. Each one is a thing you finish before the next matters.
-
Station one
Learn it free
Only the best few, deliberately. Every one of these is free to use — the pill on each card says exactly what is and isn't free.
The FinOps Framework
Free to learn · no certificate
The discipline's own framework — domains, capabilities and maturity — published free by the FinOps Foundation. This is the vocabulary the job is conducted in.

AWS Well-Architected Framework
Free to learn · no certificate
The cost optimisation pillar is the practical half. Free to read.

Google Cloud Well-Architected Framework
Free to learn · no certificate
Same discipline, second platform. Cost models differ more between clouds than the marketing suggests.

Station two
Attest strategically
The FinOps Foundation runs its own certification and it is the recognised one in this field. We are not naming a price because we have not verified the current fee and renewal terms to this project's standard. Read the framework free first — it is the same body of knowledge the exam covers.

Station three
Prove it
A certificate says you passed a test. These say you can do the job.
A bill you reduced, with the number
What it was, what you changed, what it became. Even on a personal account. This is the only artifact this job needs.
A cost anomaly you explained
Find a spike, trace it to a cause, and write the one-paragraph explanation a manager could forward.
A tagging or allocation scheme
Show how you made spend attributable to teams. Unattributable spend is the root problem in most organisations.
-
Station four
Get hired
Search these exact titles
Who hires for this. Any organisation with a cloud bill large enough to notice — typically mid-size upward, plus consultancies selling cost reviews.
A concrete saving with a before and after figure is unusually easy for an interviewer to check and value. That is our reasoning about what is inspectable, not a hiring statistic we have verified.
On salaryWe don't publish salary estimates. Numbers copied between blogs drift from reality, and a wrong number costs you real negotiating power. When we have a verified public source, it goes here with its date.
