Can I actually do this?
Open without a degree, but genuinely senior — nobody is hired into this from a course. It is where cloud, infrastructure and engineering careers arrive after several years, and the distinguishing skill is being able to justify a trade-off to a non-technical decision-maker. If you are early, this is a destination to aim at rather than a next step.
Who it suits. People who can hold a whole system in their head and explain it to someone who will not read the diagram.
Runway. Years. This is a senior role and the title reflects experience more than study.

This is one of the few roles where a cloud architecture certificate genuinely appears in job requirements, particularly for consultancies and partner firms whose vendor status depends on certified staff. Show a case where the boring choice was right. Architects who always recommend the interesting option are expensive.
A cost estimate that turned out close
Model what something will cost to run and compare it to reality. Very few can.
