Data Analyst
You answer questions with data, and explain the answer to people who will not read your code.
No degree needed One of the more approachable entries — the technical floor is lower than engineering, the communication bar is higher.
Can I actually do this?
A genuine no-degree route, and one of the more reachable ones, because SQL is testable in an interview and everything else is portfolio. Many people arrive from operations, finance or support roles where they already worked with spreadsheets.
Who it suits. People who are sceptical by instinct, ask what a number actually counts, and can explain a finding without jargon.
Runway. Months. SQL is the core skill and it is learnable quickly; the judgement takes longer.
Coming from any job where you already wrangled spreadsheets or reports? That is genuinely relevant experience here. Help Desk / IT Support

The route
Four stations, in order. Each one is a thing you finish before the next matters.

Station one
Learn it free
Only the best few, deliberately. Every one of these is free to use — the pill on each card says exactly what is and isn't free.
PostgreSQL — the official tutorial
Free to learn · no certificate
SQL from the database's own documentation, free and open source. SQL is the one skill this role is reliably tested on, and Postgres is the dialect most worth learning.

pandas — getting started
Free to learn · no certificate
The standard Python library for working with tabular data, documented free by the project. Shown for version 3.0.5.

Google Data Analytics Professional Certificate
Free to learn · paid certificate
A structured route if you want one, with real projects. Free to start, PAID to certify — Coursera's "enroll for free" means free enrolment, not a free certificate.

Station two
Attest strategically
No certificate is required to get hired here, and we would rather say so. SQL is tested directly in interviews, so a certificate cannot stand in for it. The Google certificate above is worth considering for the structure and the projects, not as a credential employers demand.
Nothing here is worth paying for

Station three
Prove it
A certificate says you passed a test. These say you can do the job.
An analysis that changed someone's mind
Take a public dataset, ask a real question, and write up the answer for a non-technical reader. The write-up is the artifact, not the notebook.
A dashboard someone else uses
Build a dashboard for a real person — a club, a small business, a friend's shop — and iterate after they tell you it is confusing.
A data-quality finding
Document a case where the data was wrong or misleading and you caught it. Scepticism is the skill that separates an analyst from a chart generator.

Station four
Get hired
Search these exact titles
Who hires for this. Almost every organisation of any size — retail, healthcare, finance, government, charities. The widest employer base outside frontend.
SQL is usually tested live, so practise it against a real database rather than reading about it. That is our reading of how these interviews run, not a statistic we have verified.
On salaryWe don't publish salary estimates. Numbers copied between blogs drift from reality, and a wrong number costs you real negotiating power. When we have a verified public source, it goes here with its date.
Where this route continues
- Data Engineer (AI/ML) — toward pipelines and infrastructure
- Machine Learning Engineer — toward modelling

PostgreSQL and pandas docs fetched and READ 2026-07-27. The Google certificate is present in the operator's master directory. Kaggle Learn was considered and EXCLUDED — it renders 58 characters server-side and could not be verified.
