Can I actually do this?
We are going to be blunt, because much of the internet is not. This role usually expects a PhD or an equivalent publication record, and no course or certificate substitutes for that. Its prerequisites are linear algebra, calculus and probability before any machine learning at all. If you are switching into tech and want a job this year, one of the other routes on this site is a better use of your time — this is a multi-year academic path, and saying otherwise would waste years of yours.
Who it suits. People who want to work on open questions and are prepared for most experiments to fail.
Runway. The longest path on this site, and it sits on top of substantial mathematics — linear algebra, calculus and probability come before any machine learning. We give no hours figure: the only one available is unsourced, and for a multi-year academic path a fake number is worse than none.

A certificate says you passed a test. These say you can do the job.
A published paper
Peer-reviewed, or a serious preprint. This is the actual credential of the field and there is no shortcut around it.
A reproduction of someone else's result
Reproducing published work — and reporting honestly when it does not reproduce — is respected and genuinely useful to the field.
An open research artifact
Code, data or a benchmark that others use. Being cited for a tool is a real entry into the community.
