AI Governance Specialist
You work out whether the organisation is allowed to ship the model, and on what conditions.
No degree needed Moderate technically. The hard part is making a judgement on a fast-moving legal picture.
Can I actually do this?
A young field created largely by regulation — the EU AI Act in particular — which means demand is being manufactured by law rather than by fashion. Genuinely open without a degree, and one of the few AI roles where a non-technical background is an asset rather than something to overcome. In our reading, people arrive from GRC, legal, policy and audit at least as often as from engineering.
Who it suits. People who can read a regulation and a model card and hold both in mind.
Runway. Months to a year, and policy or legal backgrounds transfer as well as technical ones.
Coming from compliance, audit or policy work? This is the AI role that background transfers into most directly, and you will not be behind on the technical side for long. Governance, Risk & Compliance Analyst AI Safety Researcher Technical Writer

The route
Four stations, in order. Each one is a thing you finish before the next matters.
-
Station one
Learn it free
Only the best few, deliberately. Every one of these is free to use — the pill on each card says exactly what is and isn't free.
NIST AI Risk Management Framework
Free to learn · no certificate
The voluntary framework most organisations are structuring their AI governance around. Free from NIST, and the vocabulary this job is conducted in.

The EU AI Act — the texts
Free to learn · no certificate
The regulation itself, free to read, with the risk tiers that decide what is permitted. Whether or not you are in Europe, it is shaping how products are built.

OWASP Top 10 for LLM Applications
Free to learn · no certificate
So you know what the technical risks actually are rather than only their names. Free.

Station two
Attest strategically
This is one of the few places on this site where a certificate is a reasonable early purchase, because the field is new enough that employers have little else to screen on and the IAPP credential is the recognised one. Read the caveats on its page before you commit — the fee is not printed on the issuer's own page we read, so confirm the current price yourself.
IAPP Artificial Intelligence Governance Professional (AIGP)
IAPP · AIGP

The honest cost Cost Not published
IAPP does not print the fee on this page, rendered or not. Membership status typically affects certification pricing at IAPP, so check while signed in.Validity Not stated on the fetched page. Renewal Not stated on the fetched page. Assessment Certification exam; IAPP publishes a free Body of Knowledge and Exam Blueprint Proctored No Verify via unknown Cost per active year Unknowncannot be computed — no published fee Governance-facing credential covering AI law, risk and responsible-AI practice.
Read this before you buyNO independent accreditation was found on its page — a dated absence, not proof it will never have one. Compare CertNexus CAIP above, which is ANAB/ISO 17024 accredited. Both are vendor-neutral AI certifications; only one is independently accredited, and that difference is the point.

Station three
Prove it
A certificate says you passed a test. These say you can do the job.
A risk assessment of a real system
Take a public AI product, assess it against the NIST framework, and state what you would require before deployment.
A model card someone could rely on
Document intended use, limits and known failure modes clearly enough for a non-technical decision-maker.
A policy that survives an engineer reading it
Write one that is specific enough to follow and not so rigid that it gets ignored.

Station four
Get hired
Search these exact titles
Who hires for this. Banks, insurers, health systems, government, and any company deploying AI into a regulated market or selling into Europe.
Written assessments are the deliverable and interviewers can read them, which makes portfolio work unusually legible here. That is our reasoning about what is inspectable, not a verified hiring statistic.
On salaryWe don't publish salary estimates. Numbers copied between blogs drift from reality, and a wrong number costs you real negotiating power. When we have a verified public source, it goes here with its date.
